FraMCoS 9 - 9th International Conference on Fracture Mechanics of Concrete and Concrete Structures, Berkeley, USA - From 28 May 2016 to 01 June 2016

Theme:

Many conferences include discussions of damage, cracking and fracture of concrete, but mostly outside the context of fracture mechanics. Other conferences cover the subject of fracture mechanics, but rarely with its application to concrete. IA-FraMCoS was founded to help fill this gap.

Concrete is an archetypical quasibrittle material. It consists of brittle constituents and is characterized by a non-negligible material characteristic length, which endows the material with a behavior that is transitional between the stress-strain relations for distributed damage at small scales and linear elastic fracture mechanics at large scales. This transitional behavior poses difficult challenges for theoretical, experimental and computational research.

Originally, IA-FraMCoS only activity was the triennial conference series with focus on concrete. Presently, it seeks to expand its activities to cover not only fundamental developments in concrete but also promotion of fracture-based approaches in engineering practice. Such an approach is long overdue in infrastructure life-cycle assessment (durability), environmental protection (long term waste storage, carbon dioxide sequestration), energy (nuclear vessels, fracking) and engineered design of new materials.

This will be accomplished not only through the perennial conferences, but also through seminar series, short courses (primarily to industry), and endorsements of high quality scientific research.

FraMCoS-9 welcomes paper contributions within, or spanning, the following themes:
A: Theoretical fracture mechanics
B: Experimental methodologies
C: Computational modeling
D: Durability/coupled problems
E: Novel cementitious and/or other quasi-brittle materials
F: Structural concrete applications.

Sustainable Built Environment Conference, Zürich, Switzerland - From 13 June 2016 to 17 June 2016

Theme:

Overview

Consuming over 40% of total primary energy, the built environment is in the centre of worldwide strategies and measures towards a more sustainable future.
To provide resilient solutions, a simple optimisation of individual technologies will not be sufficient. In contrast, whole-system thinking reveals and exploits connections between parts. Each system interacts with others on different scales (materials, components, buildings, cities) and domains (ecology, economy and social). Whole-system designers optimize the performance of such systems by understanding interconnections and identifying synergies. The more complete the design integration, the better the result.
The conference aims to provide a platform for exchange between researchers and practitioners of the construction sector to foster system thinking in the built environment.

Topics

- Integrated approaches to energy and resource efficiency
- Distributed energy and infrastructure systems for buildings and cities
- Life-cycle oriented building and construction materials
- Practices for interactive user and stakeholder involvement
- Economic models and policy development for fast and appropriate strategy implementation

11th HPC (High Performance Concrete) & 2nd CIC (Concrete Innovation Conference), Tromsø, Norway - From 06 March 2017 to 08 March 2017

Theme:

The 11th HPC will actually be the 30th Anniversary since the 1st HSC conference (forerunner of HPC) was held in Stavanger, Norway. The term HPC includes more than strength and denotes concrete that perform exceptionally well ranging from rheology in fresh state to durability both as material and in construction processes/structures. Esthetics and architectural expression is also part of this.

The 2nd CIC follows the success of the 1st CIC held in Oslo, Norway, in June 2014. The future needs expressed by the industry, the society, such as energy saving, reduced CO2‐emission, and resources use, efficient construction and higher performance to lower cost, are innovation drivers. The 2nd CIC themes will be based on this. To underline the importance of innovation, a contest will be organized to highlight the best innovation in several categories.

The two conferences will be overlapping with 11th HPC running 6-7 March and 2nd CIC running 7-8 March 2017. Delegates can participate at individual conferences or both.

Abstract deadline for either conference is 1st of May 2016

SHCC 4 - Strain-hardening cement-based composites, Dresden, Germany - From 18 September 2017 to 20 September 2017

Theme:

SHCC4 Conference is the follow-up of three previous successful international events in Stellenbosch (South Africa, 2005), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil, 2011) and Dordrecht (The Netherlands, 2014), all of them focusing on strain-hardening cement-based composites and other types of advanced fibre-reinforced concrete materials such as textile reinforced concrete (TRC) and high-performance fibre-reinforced cement-based composites (HPFRCC). All these new materials exhibit pseudo-ductile behavior resulting from the formation of multiple, fine cracks when subject to tensile loading. The use of such
types of fibre-reinforced concrete could revolutionise the planning, development, dimensioning, structural and architectural design, construction of new and strengthening and repair of existing buildings and structures in many areas of application.

Contributions to the conference are expected to cover the latest findings and research works related on SHCC, TRC and HPFRCC. They may be within – but are not limited to – the following topics:
- Material design and manufacturing;
- Mechanical properties and test methods;
- Structural design and performance.
- Durability design and performance;
- Computational methods;
- Use for strengthening and repair;
- Practical applications.
